My Story

 

Fiji Citizen, former Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition, Entrepreneur and Entertainer.

Mick Beddoes was born in Lautoka on July 3 1951, his father was a Road Supervisor for the PWD so he travelled around where ever his father was posted so underwent his primary education at Drasa Avenue School in Lautoka, St Joan of Arc in Sigatoka, Labasa Primary, Suva Grammar School in Suva.

He completed his secondary education at the Suva Grammar School in Veiuto, Suva up to 5th form level.

He started work in as a salesman in Suva Motors Limited in 1970, then joined the Grand Pacific Hotel as receptionist, and worked his way up to being Public Relations officer, before accepting a position of Assistant Bar Manager at the Tradewinds Hotel. He joined Mana Island Resort as the Front office Manager, and later worked as Manager of the Sunlover Hotel in Nadi. He was appointed as Assistant Manager for Noah’s Coral Garden Hotel [now Warrick Fiji] and was sent to Sydney Australia for 6 months training at Noah’s Northside Gardens hotel until he returned to Fiji following the collapse of the construction works at the Fiji hotel site. He joined the Fijian Resort as Duty Manager and was later promoted to Front Office Manager.

He started his own company Sun Tours Fiji and was its Managing Director until March 2000, when he co-founded a new joint venture tour company Coral Sun Fiji and was appointed its Managing Director. He divested his interest in the company in July 2005.

As Campaign Manager for the Nadi Alliance, Mick worked closely with the late Ratu Sir Kamasese Mara and ran a very successful Campaign for the Alliance Party that helped to elect into parliament of many Alliance MP’s and Ministers over the years.
During this time Mick & former wife Kerry were selected to represent the youth of Fiji by Ratu Sir Kamasese Mara, on the occasion of Her Majesty’s official visit to Fiji when they met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia in Suva and Prince Charles & Princess Dianne at Nadi Airport.

In 2001 he was elected to parliament as the member for the West Central General Constituency and served as Opposition Leader from 2002 to 2004. In 2006 He was re-elected for a second term and appointed for a second time as Opposition Leader in June 2006 by the President.

Mr Beddoes continued to operate out of his office in Nadi and perform his responsibilities as Opposition Leader despite the overthrow of the Government in the December 2006 coup d'état.

Mick stood for elections in 2014 but was not successful. He was invited by Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa to be her Principal Administrative Officer in the Opposition Parliamentary Office following the elections until he returned to Sabeto, Nadi in 2016. Since January 2018 Mick has established himself as a political commentator and his posts to July 2020 have reached 3.4 million people with 863,000 engaged. He recently started his own 'PodCast'.
